Overview

BPC-157 is a synthetic peptide made of fifteen amino acids, which is why it is sometimes called a pentadecapeptide. Its sequence is drawn from a larger protective protein found naturally in human gastric juice, the fluid in the stomach. First described in research in the early 1990s, it has since become one of the most studied compounds in the entire tissue repair field, with dozens of published reports examining how it affects the body’s ability to rebuild itself. It is most associated with connective tissue and the gut lining, but research has looked at its activity across many tissue types. Within the catalog it sits at the center of the healing and recovery category and appears in several blends and the flagship kit.

How it works

Research attributes much of its activity to angiogenesis, the growth of new blood vessels, since a fresh blood supply is one of the first things an injured area needs. Studies describe BPC-157 raising a signaling protein called VEGF and switching on the downstream pathway, often written as VEGFR2, Akt, and eNOS, that drives that vessel growth. Beyond blood supply, research reports effects on collagen production, on the migration and growth of fibroblasts, the cells that lay down new tissue, and on nitric oxide signaling, which helps regulate blood flow and protects tissue. Some studies also describe an increase in growth hormone receptor expression in tendon cells, which may make those cells more responsive to the body’s own repair signals. Taken together, these are the same processes the body relies on to recover after an injury.

What researchers study

In laboratory and animal models, BPC-157 has been examined for the healing of tendon, ligament, muscle, bone, and gastrointestinal tissue, along with measurable reductions in inflammatory markers and improvements in small vessel integrity. A 2024 systematic review covering more than thirty studies dating back to 1993 concluded that it improved functional, structural, and biomechanical outcomes across these tissue types in preclinical work. It is worth being clear about the state of the evidence. The large majority of this research is preclinical, meaning cell and animal studies, and human research is still limited to small early pilot studies. Researchers also note that much of the literature comes from a small number of laboratories, a normal feature of how an emerging compound is studied and a reason the work continues. That balance, a deep preclinical record alongside limited human data, is exactly why BPC-157 remains an active area of research rather than a settled one.
