Overview
Selank is a synthetic peptide developed in Russia at the Institute of Molecular Genetics, and it is built from a natural immune regulating peptide called tuftsin, with a short stabilizing extension added so it lasts longer in the body. It is studied mainly as an anxiolytic, a term for a compound examined for calming and anti anxiety effects, and it was designed specifically to pursue that calm without the drawbacks of conventional sedatives. It is one half of a pair with Semax, both products of the same Russian peptide design program and both typically studied as intranasal compounds. It anchors the cognitive category and pairs with NAD+ in The Clarity kit.
How it works
Research describes Selank acting through the GABA system, the brain’s main calming and inhibitory signaling network, but by a pathway distinct from benzodiazepine medications, which is central to its appeal in research. By working differently from those drugs, it is studied for producing a calming effect without the sedation, memory impairment, and dependence associated with them. Studies also report that it influences serotonin handling, including the enzymes that produce and break down serotonin, and that it modulates immune signaling molecules such as interferons and certain interleukins. This blend of calming and immune activity reflects its origin in tuftsin, an immune peptide. Researchers describe its effects as regulatory, nudging systems toward balance rather than forcing a strong single direction.
What researchers study
In animal anxiety models, including standard behavioral tests of anxiety, Selank is examined for reducing anxiety like behavior at levels that do not cause sedation, and for supporting memory and learning under stress. Comparison studies have placed it alongside benzodiazepines to highlight the difference in side effect profile. Its immune and serotonergic effects are studied as part of explaining how a calming peptide can also touch mood and resilience. Selank is a registered medicine in Russia, where it has been used clinically, but it is not approved by the FDA, and most of the published research base sits within Russian scientific circles. That concentration of the literature is a normal feature of its development history and a reason the wider research continues.
